November 2016

Los Altos Brethren School
Newsletter

As we enter the month of November thoughts of coolness, fall leaves, and Thanksgiving come to mind.  Around Los Altos Brethren School, we are thinking about Thanksgiving and the relationship between Pilgrims and Native Americans.  The character trait of the month is FRIENDSHIP.  Friendship grows and changes as children mature, bringing with it times of insecurity and dissatisfaction.

Parents and teachers alike can continue to facilitate growth in this social-emotional realm by continuing to interpret emotions for your student just as you did when your child was a preschooler.  Encourage your student to communicate their interests and emotions at home.  When discouragement is expressed at home about the activities of the school day, respond with interaction that will allow your student to problem solve their issues.  Taking responsibility for the social cues that students give to each other take time and maturity to interpret.  The adults in their lives can help by giving labels to your student about both individual and friends’ body language and facial expressions. As development of friendships continues to grow and change, encourage your student to remember, “A friend loves at all times.” (Proverbs 17:17).

November Focus
Man was created by God.

Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who  has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.”

ANNUAL THANKSGIVING FEAST
Our teachers always look forward to November and teaching the meaning and origins of Thanksgiving.  In many schools, Thanksgiving is no longer taught.  At Los Altos, we are so thankful to the Lord for the freedom to teach the truth about the Christian foundation of this holiday and of our nation.  For over 30 years, we have had a Thanksgiving Feast.  It is a very special tradition for grades 1-6, and a wonderful time of the children sharing and being together.  The Feast will be Friday, November 18th.  You will receive a special letter about the Feast on Thursday, Nov. 10th; what food ingredient your child will bring for the Feast.

1ST Annual Battle of the Schools
Eat at Chick-fil-A at Long Beach Towne Center between November 1st, 2016 and January 31, 2017.  Tell the cashier you are with Los Altos Brethren Schools.  SAVE YOUR RECEIPTS.  Turn them into the school office.  The school with the most receipts wins $2,000.  Share this with your friends and family.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION
Please send in box tops off of cereal boxes, biscuit wrapper, etc.  Collect in a baggie at home and send them in to the school office when convenient.
