I love working with seven and eight year olds! As a result, I’ve been blessed for thirty years to be teaching second grade at LABS. A native of Long Beach, I attended Biola University and then went on to receive my Bachelor of Arts at CSULB. After spending time as a student at L’Abri Switzerland, I returned to Cal State University Long Beach to earn my Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential. I completed my teacher training with the Long Beach Unified School District where I had previously been employed as an aide in the ESL program.
Besides our steady progress in the core areas of reading, math, language arts and science, second grade is known for our study of dinosaurs and Native Americans. Second grade alumni seem to remember into adulthood, making their Dinosaurlands and wigwams. A field trip to the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium has also been a long standing second grade tradition. Blessed with the freedom to incorporate a discussion inclusive of God in any area of curriculum, we focus in our study of the Bible on Moses, Daniel, and the life of Jesus.
It is my goal with second graders, to build confidence and solidify the knowledge and skills begun in first grade, while taking them a step further. I also seek to increase their independence and responsibility in the basic ways of how school and life work – preparing them for the transition ahead to third grade.
When away from school, I enjoy listening to classical music, reading, and gardening. I love roses and have a passion for trees.
One of my favorite scriptures has been Psalm 32:8 – “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go, I will counsel and watch over you.” It has been my joy to see God fulfill this promise in the lives of so many of my students as they have grown into adulthood, starting their own careers and families.
Working with Los Altos Brethren School students and families is truly a blessing.
